This article focuses on the use of structural equation modeling in management information system (MIS) research and says it may lead to inaccurate results. Structural equation modeling (SEM) using data analysis techniques is being used a great deal in MIS research. The author says that if statistical criteria are allowed to drive analysis they may lead to biased and possibly erroneous conclusions. Only substantive knowledge can lead to good results. The author looks at two published articles that are examples of situations where the information gathered was inaccurate due to the reliance on statistical information.
